IRS Form 2553 fax number

The IRS publishes two fax numbers for Form 2553, and which one is yours depends on the state your corporation is in. Both are below, with the official page they came from and the date we last checked it.

ProntoFax is an independent fax service. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Internal Revenue Service.

How we verify fax numbers

Every number on this page was published by the agency itself. The two columns beside it say when that number was last confirmed, and what confirmed it.

The Verified by column says which of these it was:

Agency website the agency publishes this number. The date is the day we read it from their page or their published file.

ProntoFax user a fax sent through ProntoFax reached this number and the receiving machine confirmed it. The date is the most recent delivery.

ProntoFax automation we called the number and heard a fax tone answer. Nothing is sent and the call ends as soon as the line answers.

Needs verification recent attempts to this number did not go through. It stays listed because the agency still publishes it, but check it against your own letter before you send.

The date is colored by how long ago it was:

Within 90 days 91 to 270 days Over 270 days

We never add a number because someone faxed it. A number appears here only if the agency published it. A delivered fax can confirm a number, but it can never create one.

What goes to these numbers

These two numbers are for Form 2553 and the pages the form itself asks you to file with it. Other IRS forms have their own numbers and addresses, so nothing else belongs here:

  • Form 2553, the election by a small business corporation
  • The shareholder consent statements the form requires, signed by every shareholder
  • The explanation the instructions ask for when the election is being filed late
  • Any attachment the form or its instructions tell you to include

Before you send

The IRS asks for no cover sheet on a faxed Form 2553 and publishes no page limit for it. A short cover sheet still helps the service center match your pages to the right file, and if you use one, include:

  • The corporation’s legal name exactly as it appears on the form
  • The employer identification number shown on the form
  • A daytime phone number for the person who signed
  • The number of pages, including the cover sheet

Keep the original. The instructions are explicit about this: if the corporation files the election by fax, the original Form 2553 stays with the corporation’s permanent records.

Send it once. Faxing and also mailing the same election leaves the service center two copies to reconcile, which is a delay you created.

Watch the deadline. The election has to be filed no more than 2 months and 15 days after the beginning of the tax year it is to take effect, or at any time during the tax year before that one. The instructions explain exactly how those two months are counted.

Expect a letter, not a receipt. The service center writes to say whether the election was accepted and when it takes effect, generally within 60 days of filing. Until that letter arrives your delivery confirmation is the only record you hold that the pages reached the IRS at all.

Questions about faxing Form 2553

Can Form 2553 be faxed?

Yes. The instructions tell you to send the original election or fax it to the service center for your state, so fax is a route the IRS names itself rather than a workaround. If you do fax it, the original stays in the corporation’s records.

Which of the two numbers do I use?

The one for the state where the corporation’s principal business, office, or agency is located. The two state groups are listed under each number above, taken from the IRS where-to-file table and nowhere else.

Does the IRS confirm it received my fax?

Not as a receipt. The service center writes to tell you whether the election was accepted and when it takes effect, generally within 60 days. Until then your own delivery confirmation is the only evidence the pages arrived.

Is there a page limit?

The IRS publishes none for this form. ProntoFax sends up to 25 pages in one fax, which is comfortably more than a completed Form 2553 with its consent statements.

Why fax it instead of mailing it?

This form has a filing deadline, and a fax gives you a timestamped delivery confirmation the moment the receiving machine answers. Mail gives you nothing comparable unless you pay for certified delivery and then wait for the card to come back.
